Common Illnesses During Vacation: How to Prevent Them and Stay Prepared

Vacations are the perfect time to relax, disconnect from the routine, and enjoy new destinations or activities. However, sometimes, during this break, we may face certain health issues. From colds to food poisoning, there are various illnesses that can ruin our vacation if we're not prepared. Here's a look at the most common ones and how to prevent them.

Gastroenteritis or Food Poisoning

During vacations, we often try new foods, especially if we travel to another country. Changes in diet or water quality can lead to digestive issues like gastroenteritis or dreaded food poisoning.

Prevention:

  • Eat at places with good hygiene.
  • Make sure to drink bottled water if traveling to a place where tap water is not safe.
  • Avoid raw or undercooked foods.
  • If in doubt about a place, check recommendations from other travelers.

Sunburn

Long exposure to the sun without protection is one of the main causes of sunburn during vacations. Sometimes we get so relaxed that we forget to apply sunscreen, which can lead to long-term skin damage.

Prevention:

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after swimming.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (10 AM to 4 PM).

Eye Infections (Conjunctivitis)

Conjunctivitis, which can be viral or bacterial, is common during vacations, especially if traveling to warm climates or places with poorly maintained swimming pools. Contact with dirty surfaces also increases the risk of infection.

Prevention:

  • Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands.
  • Don’t share towels or contact lenses.
  • If swimming, wear goggles to prevent eye irritation.

Colds and Flu

When traveling, especially by plane, train, or bus, we're exposed to closed environments where viruses can spread easily. Climate changes can also weaken our defenses, making us more vulnerable to colds or the flu.

Prevention:

  • Wash your hands frequently.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Stay well hydrated.
  • If you have cold symptoms, try to rest and stay warm.

Dehydration and Heatstroke

In hot destinations, dehydration and heatstroke are common issues, especially if we don’t drink enough water or engage in intense physical activities under the sun. These problems can be serious if not treated in time.

Prevention:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Wear light, comfortable clothing.
  • Avoid strenuous activities in the sun, especially during the hottest hours.

Injuries from Physical Activities

If you plan on doing sports or hiking during your vacation, injuries such as sprains or falls are common, especially if you don’t take the necessary precautions.

Prevention:

  • Warm up before exercising or engaging in physical activities.
  • Wear proper equipment (comfortable shoes, knee pads, etc.).
  • Don’t overexert yourself, especially if you’re not used to exercise.

General Tips to Stay Healthy During Vacation:

  • Carry a basic first aid kit (painkillers, antiseptics, bandages, etc.).
  • Learn about the local healthcare system if traveling abroad.
  • Maintain your personal hygiene routine: wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, and cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
